SkyArchive Project

The Goal of the SkyArchive Project

The SkyArchive Project is on a mission to capture the beauty and breadth of the night sky in 360-degree spherical panoramas. We want to give you a real sense of what the night sky feels like in different corners of our world, while also drawing attention to the fast-disappearing celestial views.

Why It Matters
Due to excessive and misplaced lighting—from streetlights to commercial and residential fixtures—our beautiful night skies are fading away with alarming speed. This isn't just a loss for stargazers; it's a problem affecting our environment, our well-being, and our connection to the universe.

Our Approach
Using microelectronics and panorama techniques, the SkyArchive Project will showcase the night sky in its varying states of visibility, influenced by location and light pollution. These panoramas are more than just snapshots; they're a call to awareness and action.

The sky panoramas are captured using a rigorously standardized workflow and processing pipeline. This ensures that each panorama adheres to consistent data parameters and image processing techniques, making them directly comparable for analytical or aesthetic evaluation. Importantly, we refrain from significant image processing or enhancement. Our overarching aim is to depict the night sky in a manner that is as authentic and true-to-life as possible

Come along on this journey to appreciate the sky's natural beauty and understand the pressing need to preserve it for future generations.
